The Job Market Has Changed
The job search strategies that worked in 2019 don't work as well in 2025. Remote work has expanded the candidate pool for every role. AI tools have made it easier to apply to hundreds of jobs, flooding recruiters with applications. Economic uncertainty has made hiring more selective.
The result: more competition, longer hiring timelines, and a greater premium on differentiation.
Step 1: Define Your Target (Before You Apply to Anything)
The biggest job search mistake is applying broadly without a clear target. Define:
- Target roles: 2–3 specific job titles you're qualified for and excited about
- Target industries: 2–3 industries where your experience is most relevant
- Target companies: A list of 20–30 companies you'd genuinely want to work for
- Target location/remote: Your geographic constraints and remote work preferences
- Target compensation: Your minimum and target salary range
Step 2: Build Your Target Company List
Identify 20–30 companies you'd genuinely want to work for: Dream companies (5–10), Strong fits (10–15), Safety companies (5–10). Research each company: their products, culture, recent news, growth trajectory, and open roles.
Step 3: Optimise Your Foundation
Before you start applying or networking, ensure your foundation is strong: ATS-optimised resume, fully optimised LinkedIn profile, portfolio or GitHub (for roles where work samples matter), and references briefed and ready.
Step 4: The 70/30 Rule — Network More Than You Apply
Research consistently shows that 70–80% of jobs are filled through networking. Yet most job seekers spend 90% of their time applying online and 10% networking. This is backwards.
Target allocation: 30% of time applying to jobs online (tailored applications, not mass applications), 70% of time networking, informational interviews, and relationship building.
Informational interview template: "Hi [Name], I'm [your name], a [your title] with [X years] of experience in [field]. I'm exploring new opportunities and [Company] is at the top of my list. I'd love to learn more about your experience there and the [department/team] culture. Would you be open to a 20-minute call?"
Step 5: Apply Strategically, Not Broadly
A tailored application takes 45–60 minutes. Apply to 5–10 well-researched roles per week rather than 50 generic applications. For each application: read the job description thoroughly, research the company, tailor your resume to the specific role, write a personalised cover letter, and look for a connection at the company who could refer you.
Step 6: Track Everything
Use a spreadsheet or tool like Notion or Airtable to track: company name and role, application date, application status, contact name and notes, and follow-up dates. Review your tracker weekly.
Step 7: Manage the Interview Pipeline
Phone screens: Research the company, prepare your "tell me about yourself," and have 3 questions ready.
Technical screens: Practice on LeetCode, HackerRank, or similar platforms for technical roles.
Hiring manager interviews: Prepare STAR stories, research the interviewer on LinkedIn, and have thoughtful questions about the team and role.
Final rounds: Send personalised thank-you emails to each interviewer within 24 hours.
Step 8: Evaluate and Negotiate Offers
When offers come in: take at least 24 hours before responding, research the market rate, evaluate total compensation (base, bonus, equity, benefits), negotiate (see our salary negotiation guide), and get the final offer in writing before giving notice.
Step 9: Maintain Momentum
Job searches take longer than expected. The average job search takes 3–6 months. Set weekly goals, take breaks, celebrate small wins, and keep learning. Use the job search period to develop skills that make you more competitive.
