Executive Resumes Are Different

At the executive level, the rules change. A C-suite resume isn't a list of job duties — it's a strategic narrative about leadership impact, business transformation, and value creation. Recruiters and boards reading executive resumes are asking: "Has this person done what we need done? Can they do it at our scale?"

The Core Difference: Scope and Impact

Mid-level: "Managed a team of 12 engineers and delivered 3 product launches on time."

Executive: "Built and scaled the engineering organisation from 12 to 85, establishing the technical foundation that supported 4x revenue growth and a successful Series C raise."

Every bullet point should answer: "What was the business impact of my leadership?"

Executive Resume Format

Length: Two pages is standard for executives with 15+ years of experience. Three pages is acceptable for very senior leaders with extensive board memberships, publications, or speaking engagements.

Structure: Contact Information + LinkedIn URL, Executive Summary (4–6 sentences), Core Competencies (12–16 keywords in a 3-column grid), Professional Experience, Board Memberships and Advisory Roles, Education, Speaking Engagements or Publications.

The Executive Summary

Example (CEO): "Transformational CEO with 22 years of experience building and scaling technology companies in SaaS and enterprise software. Led [Company] from $12M to $180M in ARR over 7 years, culminating in a $620M strategic acquisition. Expert in building high-performance cultures, navigating complex M&A, and driving operational excellence at scale. Seeking CEO or President role at a growth-stage technology company."

Writing Executive Achievement Bullets

Executive bullets should focus on business outcomes, not activities. Use this structure: Action + Scale + Business Impact

Weak: "Oversaw the company's expansion into European markets."

Strong: "Led European market entry across 6 countries, establishing operations, hiring 120 staff, and achieving $28M in revenue within 24 months — 40% ahead of plan."

Quantifying Executive Impact

At the executive level, the numbers are bigger — and more important. Every significant initiative should have a number attached: revenue growth (absolute and percentage), EBITDA improvement, headcount built or managed, budget managed, market share gained, valuation at exit or fundraise, cost savings achieved.

What Executive Recruiters Look For

Executive search firms (Spencer Stuart, Korn Ferry, Heidrick & Struggles) conduct most senior executive searches. They're looking for: pattern of progression, relevant industry experience, specific functional expertise the board needs, cultural fit signals, and network quality.
